NOAA Weather Alerts: Pacific Tropical Depressions, Tropical Storms and Hurricanes

Harvesting and Aggregating Storm Projections and Satellite Imagery

The National Weather Service now provides RSS feeds [RSS] of their weather bulletins as well as updated imagery. Here we are exploring automatic data harvesting and data aggregation by periodically (every hour or every 20 min) extracting storm projection maps from the NOAA RSS feed and displaying the strom projections, satellite and radar imagery on the same page. These same ideas can be applied to harvesting and aggregating patient, instructional or research information. (See for example Genome harvesting at EMBL.)

This page will provide students, faculty, staff and families with the latest in weather advisories (within the RSS content boxes below), storm tracks and satellite imagery. Our web-harvesting and aggregation tools update this information every 20 minutes and cache the images locally so that presentation is independent of internet traffic to NOAA and its mirrors.
